Your Guide to Virtual Classes in Comal ISD

With all the changes 2020 has brought, it’s no wonder many parents are wondering what the 2020/2021 school year will look like – both for them and their students. From when school will start to how your children will learn, there are many questions to answer.

Some of the questions parents ask most frequently are, “When do kids go back to school 2020?” and, “Where can I find information on virtual classes in Comal ISD?”

The Comal ISD Parent Portal on the school district’s website includes a great deal of useful information that can help. Here’s a quick outline of what the upcoming school year holds.

When does school start for Comal ISD?

The Comal ISD calendar lists August 25th as the start date for all schools. Children who live at Meyer Ranch attend Bill Brown Elementary School, Smithson Valley Middle School, and Smithson Valley High School. These are some of the mostly highly ranked schools in New Braunfels, Tx.

Virtual learning at Comal ISD

Parents who aren’t comfortable with sending their child to school have the option to have their child participate in Remote Learning for the 2020-21 school year. Students who are in Remote Learning will receive instruction via a combination of two methods: asynchronous and live synchronous lessons.

Parents will receive an email for each student they have in school that includes a link to a one-question survey asking which method of learning they’re most likely to choose given what they know about the current status of COVID-19 and their personal health concerns.

Parents who are curious about Remote Learning can find remote learning resources for all grade levels on the Comal ISD website. Information and sample schedules are available in both English and Spanish.

Options for Learning

Parents can choose between two methods of instructional delivery for their students.

On-Campus Instruction – daily instruction requiring students to be physically present on campus each day for in-person learning.

Remote Learning – daily instruction allowing students to engage in learning from their home setting using digital platforms.

Both instructional delivery options:

  • Require daily attendance
  • Are equivalent in instructional rigor, scope, and course expectations
  • Use Comal ISD’s curriculum and district-adopted and TEKS-aligned resources
  • Are consistent with Comal ISD’s grading guidelines
  • Use Seesaw, Google Classroom, or ECHO

Changing instructional delivery options

Before each grading period, parents/guardians will commit to a preferred method of instructional delivery for the duration of the upcoming grading cycle.

Steps for Reopening Safely

Comal ISD is focusing on how to best prevent COVID-19 from entering schools, how to mitigate any spread, and how to respond to confirmed cases in the district. They will be closely monitoring health and safety in schools. The guiding principles that shaped the planning process are:

  1. Back to Normal: What have we always done that looks a little different this year?
  2. Ownership of Wellness: What is your role in protecting our district?
  3. Response to Cases: How will we address COVID-19 cases on campus?
  4. Communication and Information: Where can you find reliable information and updates?

To that end, the Comal ISD is operating with the following safety practices in mind:

  • Monitoring symptoms and exposure through daily health screenings and case management
  • Promoting personal hygiene practices to minimize the risk of contamination
  • Social distancing to decrease any impact of viral spread
  • Facility cleanliness to ensure a safe environment

Signs and other visual reminders will be prevalent in all areas of campus to remind students to follow new procedures and protocols. In accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order, and in alignment with TEA guidance, all individuals for whom it is developmentally appropriate will be required to wear a face covering indoors when social distancing measures cannot be maintained.

Additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be allocated to staff members who, by nature of their position, are not able to maintain distance (i.e. special education staff, cafeteria staff, campus nurses, etc.).

Additional information about the precautions the school district is taking, Comal ISD News, and virtual classes in Comal ISD can be found in the Parent Center on the Comal ISD website.

The Hill Country is almost in your backyard, and outdoor recreation abounds at nearby Canyon Lake and the many nearby rivers. In short, the answer to the question, “Is New Braunfels a good place to live?” is a resounding “Yes!”

The Charm of Small Town Living.

The pace is just a little slower in New Braunfels, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the area’s historic ambience and natural beauty. Downtown New Braunfels is full of unique shops to explore. There are eight public parks located in various areas around Canyon Lake, and some offer overnight camping. The Comal River and the Guadalupe River are both popular with tubers. The Comal River is a spring-fed natural body of water with a steady temperature of 70 – 72 degrees year-round. The Guadalupe is ideal for tubing, rafting, fly fishing, and canoeing. Both rivers are easily accessible from New Braunfels. If you’re still wondering “Should I move to New Braunfels?” – read on! Excellent schools.

The district has a wide variety of offerings, including a gifted/talented program, career and technology offerings, dual high school/college enrollment, wide range of special education services, strong emphasis on teacher training, and outstanding fine arts, agricultural and athletic programs.

Delicious dining options.

If you had to describe New Braunfels’ culinary scene in one word, that word would be: variety. From old-world German fare that pays tribute to the heritage of the area to traditional barbecue and Tex Mex, there’s no shortage of restaurants to satisfy pretty much any craving you may have.

Hiking and biking destinations.

When you want to stretch your legs, there are multiple options in New Braunfels. Amenities along County Line Memorial Trail include trees, rest areas with benches, and bridges that connect surrounding neighborhoods to the trail and outdoor fitness stations. The County Line Memorial Trail Wetlands are emergent wetlands, commonly called marshes and meadows. The trail is 2.18 miles long.

The Dry Comal Trail is a 2.25 mile loop surrounding the Little League Ballfields. The trail is open to hike and bike traffic only and is the only mountain bike trail in the park system. Established in 2003 by the Parks and Recreation Department and volunteer groups, the trail offers great recreation and wildlife.

Panther Canyon Trail begins near the headwaters of the Comal Springs and ascends the Balcones Escarpment into the Edwards Plateau under the shade of oaks, Ashe juniper, cedar elm and under-story trees including Mexican buckeye, kidneywood, and Texas persimmon.

The trail crosses a dry creek bed of an ephemeral stream that only flows during or immediately after a rain. The trail covers over 49 acres and is home to many native plants and wildlife. The gently sloping pedestrian trail leads visitors approximately eight-tenths of a mile through the Balcones Escarpment. Hikers should allow at least 1.5 hours for the 1.6-mile round trip hike.

What You Need to Know About How to Stop a Virus from Spreading

How to stop a virus from spreading in your home

The best source of information on how to avoid getting sick from someone in your house is the Centers for Disease Control. They’ve published helpful guidelines, and are updating their content as more information about Coronavirus is uncovered.

If you’ve been in close contact with someone who’s been diagnosed with COVID-19, or who is under investigation for the virus, it’s important that you monitor your health closely. If you start showing any Coronavirus symptoms, such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath, contact your doctor right away. Anyone who has been diagnosed or who may have been exposed to the virus should home quarantine to avoid spread of COVID-19.

If you’re assisting someone with COVID-19

The CDC recommends that anyone who is in close contact with someone who has the Coronavirus follow these guidelines for how to stop a virus from spreading:

  • Household members should stay in another room or be separated from the patient as much as possible and use a separate bedroom and bathroom, if available.
  • Do not allow visitors who do not have an essential need to be in the home.
  • Household members should care for any pets in the home. Do not handle pets or other animals while sick.
  • Make sure shared spaces in the home have good air flow, such as an air conditioner or an opened window, weather permitting.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60 to 95% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry. If your hands are visibly dirty, use soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • The patient should wear a facemask when he or she is around other people. If the patient is not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), any caregiver should wear a mask when in the same room as the patient.
  • Wear a disposable facemask and gloves when you touch or have contact with the patient’s blood, stool, or body fluids, such as saliva, sputum, nasal mucus, vomit, urine.
    • Throw out disposable facemasks and gloves after using them. Do not reuse.
    • Remove gloves first and dispose of them. Then, immediately clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Next, remove and dispose of facemask, and immediately clean your hands again with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid sharing household items with the patient. You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, bedding, or other items. After the patient uses these items, you should wash them thoroughly using the guidelines below.
  • Clean all “high-touch” surfaces, such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and bedside tables, every day.
  • Wash laundry thoroughly.
  • Place all used disposable gloves, facemasks, and other contaminated items in a lined container before disposing of them with other household waste. Clean your hands (with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) immediately after handling these items. Soap and water should be used preferentially if hands are visibly dirty.

How to kill flu virus on surfaces

The brand Clorox has recommendations that correspond to the type of product you’re using:

Disinfecting wipes:

  • Wipe surface to be disinfected.
  • Keep surface wet for 4 minutes.
  • Let surface dry.
  • For highly soiled surfaces, clean excess dirt first.
  • For items that come in contact with food or mouths (like baby bottles or toys), rinse with warm water and let air-dry.

Premixed cleaners containing bleach:

  • Spray 6 to 8 inches from surface and allow product to penetrate tough stains and messes.
  • Let stand 30 seconds.
  • Wipe with a wet sponge or cloth and rinse with water, no scrubbing required.
  • For heavily soiled surfaces, pre-clean surface before disinfecting.
  • For items that come in contact with food or mouths (like baby bottles or toys), rinse with warm water and let air-dry.

Disinfecting bleach:

  • Pre-wash surface.
  • Mop or wipe with a solution of 1/2 cup of disinfecting bleach per gallon of water.
  • Allow solution to contact the surface for 5 minutes.
  • For items that come in contact with food or mouths (like baby bottles or toys), rinse with warm water and let air-dry.

Social distancing

In addition to following the guidelines above, health and government officials recommend avoiding large gatherings and maintaining a distance of 6 feet from other people (commonly called social distancing). This reduces the chance of contact with anyone knowingly or unknowingly carrying the infection.

Ideas for Fun Family Activities at Home

Ideas for Fun Family Activities at Home

Ideas for Fun Family Activities at Home

Many schools have moved classes online, and many of us are working from home these days. That brings finding fun things families can do together top of mind. Many of us are struggling to balance working from home, caring for their families, and organizing family activities at home.

We’ve compiled some ideas for keeping your children entertained – and educated – until schools reopen for onsite classes.

Bur first, we wanted to pass along some helpful advice for helping your entire family cope during these uncertain times.

Establish a routine

Josh Golin, Executive Director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, says the first priority for parents is to help their children feel safe. It’s important that our kids “don’t absorb all the anxiety that we’re feeling,” Golin said. He says it’s just as important for parents to take pressure off themselves to provide a “traditional academic” experience for young children.

Research shows kids thrive on routines. Regardless of how parents fill their child’s time at home, experts say they should aim to maintain a predictable schedule each day.

  • Build a fort with blankets or cardboard boxes.
  • Make time for active play.

  • Have a family karaoke night! There are lots of karaoke tracks on YouTube.

Some guidelines on screen time for kids

One advantage of all the available technology is that your children can have Skype or Facetime chats with their friends, cousins, and grandparents. This can be a huge help for staying connected and feeling less isolated.

Vincent Costanza, chief academic officer for Teaching Strategies, which focuses on early education curriculum, assessment and professional development, says there are times when technology can enhance relationships. “Setting up experiences where technology is used to connect with others are certainly appropriate and should be leveraged at this time.”

A few resources you might want to check out for educational content are the Kennedy Center’s daily lunch doodle with children’s book author Mo Willems and the PBS Kids Play and Learn Science app, which provides ideas for hands-on, non-screen science projects. NAEYC has advice online for parents on how to choose technology for young children, and Common Sense Media is also a good resource for parents to determine which websites, movies and books are age-appropriate.

Tips for Families Moving with a Pet

Tips for Families Moving with a Pet

Meyer Ranch in New Braunfels is designed to make it easier to savor life’s simple pleasures. For a majority of families, that means spending time with their pets. A recent survey by the American Veterinary Association found that Texas ranks ninth in the nation for the highest percentage of households with dogs. Nationwide, almost ¾ of all households have at least one pet of some kind.

Moving into your new pet-friendly home New Braunfels Tx is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. If it’s stressful for you, think how it feels for your pets, who don’t understand what’s happening or why. Pets sense your energy, so if you’re anxious, they probably will be, too.

There are several ways to make moving with a pet easier for every member of the family. Here are our most helpful in moving with pets tips.

Before moving with a pet: Get Prepared

Boxes and moving supplies can be tempting for curious kitties and dogs. Keeping everything in one room, or in the garage, with the door closed. Cats love to hide inside boxes, and bubble wrap and tape just look like toys to your dog or teething puppy. Removing temptation will make your move much easier.

Make sure the things your pets need will be easy to find after the move. A few items to have on hand include:

    • Waste bags
    • Favorite toys
    • Something for your dog to chew on (rawhide bones, chewing sticks or a favorite chew toy)
    • Leash
    • Kitty litter, box, and scooper
    • Crate, doggy gate or carrier
    • Blanket
    • Water bowls
    • Food

The Difference Between Cats and Dogs

Cats and dogs react differently o traveling or being crated. Cats often dislike being confined to a carrier or crate, while dogs may see their crates as a place of comfort.

Putting treats inside your cat’s crate prior to moving day can help ease his or her anxiety about getting inside. Consider making the carrier a little cozier with a small blanket or an old T-shirt that has your scent.

The scent is important to dogs, too. If you can, take your dog for a walk in your new neighborhood and let them check out the interior of your new home prior to moving day. The move may feel less scary to your dog if he or she is already familiar with all the smells.

If you’re moving from another city, it’s a good idea to research veterinarians and pet emergency rooms. Keep their information in your phone just in case something happens during the move. New Braunfels has several excellent veterinary clinics close to Meyer Ranch.

On the Big Day

Moving involves a lot of activity, open doors and distractions. Take some precautions to make sure your pet is safe and secure.

A few suggestions for moving with pets are:

  • Ask a friend or family member to take them in for the day
  • Take them to a doggy daycare or boarding facility
  • Install a pet gate in one of the doorframes
  • Keep your pets crated until the move is complete

Settling Into Your New Home at Meyer Ranch

In general, dogs are quicker to adjust to change than cats. Your cat may hide during the first few days in your new home. Don’t try to force him or her to come out. Be patient and allow them to take things at their own pace.

For both cats and dogs, a consistent routine is essential. Have a specific place for their food and water dishes, their beds, and litter boxes.

Exercise can help both you and your pets lessen anxiety and make the move easier. Finally, for dogs – and some cats – exercise wears them out and lessens their anxiety. Take your dog for walks in the new neighborhood – it’s also a great way to meet neighbors who have dogs of their own! If your cat has a favorite toy, spending some time engaging in active play will help them become accustomed to their new surroundings.

Making Your Home Pet-Friendly

For families with dogs, pet-friendly homes start with a securely fenced yard. Since your home at Meyer Ranch is brand new, this is less of a concern. However, you’ll still want to check for any areas your pet may be able to squeeze underneath or a gate that smart dogs can open easily.

For cat owners, you might consider keeping them confined to one room at first, then gradually let them explore the rest of your home.

Keeping Your Home Smelling and Looking Fresh

Once you’ve moved into your pet-friendly home New Braunfels Tx, you’ll want to keep it clean and free of tell-tale pet odors.

Here are a few tips for pet-friendly homes:

  1. Place doormats both inside and outside any entrances your pet will use. Mats are excellent initial barriers for dirt and germs – and they work for people, too!
  2. Groom your pets on a regular basis to help control shedding and odors. To stay on a regular schedule, book grooming appointments in advance or set reminders for yourself. If you groom your dog yourself, look for products that reduce odors.
  3. Vacuum or mop your floors frequently, especially the areas where your pet likes to play or nap.
  4. Cleaning your pet’s food and water dishes, and your cat’s litter trays, on a regular basis helps to control bacteria and odors.

Tips to Make Back to School a Breeze

Our recent Grand Opening at Meyer Ranch was a blast, with live music, food trucks, giveaways and more! If you attended our celebration – thank you for being part of such a successful day!

The opportunity to live in this exciting 700+ acre New Braunfels community may have you thinking about having your children start the next school year in the Comal ISD. With the start of the 2019 – 2020 school year upon us, however, we want to share some ideas for getting the year off to a good start. If you like these tips, bookmark them so you can review them next year!

Get the School Year off to a Positive Start

Author of “The 7 Stages of Motherhood,” Ann Pleshette Murphy, and parenting expert Brenda Nixon, M.A., have some suggestions for making the start of the school year as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Make Sure Your Child Knows What to Expect
One of the biggest stressors for preschoolers is wondering whether Mom or Dad will be there to pick them up at the end of the school day. Make sure your child knows if you’ll be meeting them at the end of the school day, or if it will be your child care provider – whether that’s a babysitter, nanny or relative.

Make Small Steps Toward an Earlier Bedtime
Putting your child to bed a little earlier each evening in the weeks prior to the start of the school year is easier on everyone than a sudden, drastic change to an earlier bed time. Making sure your child gets enough rest is important for many reasons – not the least of which is the ability to concentrate and do better in school.

Prepare Yourself and Your Child
Picking up all the items on the Comal ISDSchool supply list is only the beginning. If medical forms, permission slips or similar items are required, make sure you have them completed and ready to go before the first day of school.
Students who are new to schools in the Comal ISD must provide:

  • One proof of residency (Mortgage, lease, or bills cable, home phone, electric, gas, or water) associated with your residence. The proof of residency document must be dated within 30 days of registration.
  • Immunization record from previous school or family doctor
  • Unofficial transcript or last report card
  • Birth certificate
  • Social security number (optional)
  • Parents must provide proof of identity and custody papers (if required)Get more information on enrolling in schools in the Comal ISD here. If you’re prepared and calm, your child will feel much better about the start of the school year.

Keep Your Child Involved in the Preparations
Let your child accompany you on your school shopping trip for items on the Bill Brown Elementary School supply list, and allow them choose a few special items. Having the “right” lunch box or backpack can help your child feel excited about the start of the school year.

Start Getting Your Child Familiar with the New Routine
The first day of school will go much more smoothly if your child knows what to expect. Consider walking to the school a few times in the weeks leading up to the school year and talking about the new routine. You might even want to take some photos of landmarks along the way to school, and create a booklet to help your child remember what the day will be like.

Meet the Teacher
Building a relationship with your child’s teacher at before the first day of school can play a huge role in your child having a successful school experience. Tell the teacher know about any struggles your child may have, and let him or her know how you prefer to be contacted regarding your child’s progress in school.

Share School Memories of Your Own
Tell your child about your favorite teachers, friends you made at school, or your favorite subjects. Sharing positive stories with your child can help create an expectation for a good experience.

Avoid the Chaos if You Can
No matter how well prepared you are, back-to-school season can still be stressful. Try to set an example for your child by staying calm and optimistic. Consider doing your school shopping for items on the Smithson Valley Middle School supply list online to avoid crowds and lessen anxiety-producing situations.

Get Prepared the Night Before
Reduce morning chaos and last-minute changes by preparing for school the night before. Lay out clothes, backpacks, items from the Smithson Valley Middle School supply list and anything else needed in the morning. Getting into the habit of preparing for school the night before can make every morning calmer and less stressful.

Keep Track of Times
No one likes to be rushed – and no one likes to be kept waiting. Preparing the night before can help make sure you and your child get out the door and to the school on time. If you’re picking your child up at the end of the school day, make sure to allow yourself adequate time for the trip. Being the last child waiting in the classroom can feel scary.

Celebrate the Day
Find out what your children would like to do after their first day of school. It might be as simple as stopping at the park, or setting aside time for them to tell you about your day.
