Your Guide to Virtual Classes in Comal ISD

With all the changes 2020 has brought, it’s no wonder many parents are wondering what the 2020/2021 school year will look like – both for them and their students. From when school will start to how your children will learn, there are many questions to answer.

Some of the questions parents ask most frequently are, “When do kids go back to school 2020?” and, “Where can I find information on virtual classes in Comal ISD?”

The Comal ISD Parent Portal on the school district’s website includes a great deal of useful information that can help. Here’s a quick outline of what the upcoming school year holds.

When does school start for Comal ISD?

The Comal ISD calendar lists August 25th as the start date for all schools. Children who live at Meyer Ranch attend Bill Brown Elementary School, Smithson Valley Middle School, and Smithson Valley High School. These are some of the mostly highly ranked schools in New Braunfels, Tx.

Parents who aren’t comfortable with sending their child to school have the option to have their child participate in Remote Learning for the 2020-21 school year. Students who are in Remote Learning will receive instruction via a combination of two methods: asynchronous and live synchronous lessons.

Parents will receive an email for each student they have in school that includes a link to a one-question survey asking which method of learning they’re most likely to choose given what they know about the current status of COVID-19 and their personal health concerns.

Parents who are curious about Remote Learning can find remote learning resources for all grade levels on the Comal ISD website. Information and sample schedules are available in both English and Spanish.

Options for Learning

Parents can choose between two methods of instructional delivery for their students.

On-Campus Instruction – daily instruction requiring students to be physically present on campus each day for in-person learning.

Remote Learning – daily instruction allowing students to engage in learning from their home setting using digital platforms.

Both instructional delivery options:

  • Require daily attendance
  • Are equivalent in instructional rigor, scope, and course expectations
  • Use Comal ISD’s curriculum and district-adopted and TEKS-aligned resources
  • Are consistent with Comal ISD’s grading guidelines
  • Use Seesaw, Google Classroom, or ECHO

Changing instructional delivery options

Before each grading period, parents/guardians will commit to a preferred method of instructional delivery for the duration of the upcoming grading cycle.

Steps for Reopening Safely

Comal ISD is focusing on how to best prevent COVID-19 from entering schools, how to mitigate any spread, and how to respond to confirmed cases in the district. They will be closely monitoring health and safety in schools. The guiding principles that shaped the planning process are:

  1. Back to Normal: What have we always done that looks a little different this year?
  2. Ownership of Wellness: What is your role in protecting our district?
  3. Response to Cases: How will we address COVID-19 cases on campus?
  4. Communication and Information: Where can you find reliable information and updates?

To that end, the Comal ISD is operating with the following safety practices in mind:

  • Monitoring symptoms and exposure through daily health screenings and case management
  • Promoting personal hygiene practices to minimize the risk of contamination
  • Social distancing to decrease any impact of viral spread
  • Facility cleanliness to ensure a safe environment

Signs and other visual reminders will be prevalent in all areas of campus to remind students to follow new procedures and protocols. In accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order, and in alignment with TEA guidance, all individuals for whom it is developmentally appropriate will be required to wear a face covering indoors when social distancing measures cannot be maintained.

Additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be allocated to staff members who, by nature of their position, are not able to maintain distance (i.e. special education staff, cafeteria staff, campus nurses, etc.).

Additional information about the precautions the school district is taking, Comal ISD News, and virtual classes in Comal ISD can be found in the Parent Center on the Comal ISD website.
