What You Need to Know About How to Stop a Virus from Spreading

How to stop a virus from spreading in your home

The best source of information on how to avoid getting sick from someone in your house is the Centers for Disease Control. They’ve published helpful guidelines, and are updating their content as more information about Coronavirus is uncovered.

If you’ve been in close contact with someone who’s been diagnosed with COVID-19, or who is under investigation for the virus, it’s important that you monitor your health closely. If you start showing any Coronavirus symptoms, such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath, contact your doctor right away. Anyone who has been diagnosed or who may have been exposed to the virus should home quarantine to avoid spread of COVID-19.

If you’re assisting someone with COVID-19

The CDC recommends that anyone who is in close contact with someone who has the Coronavirus follow these guidelines for how to stop a virus from spreading:

  • Household members should stay in another room or be separated from the patient as much as possible and use a separate bedroom and bathroom, if available.
  • Do not allow visitors who do not have an essential need to be in the home.
  • Household members should care for any pets in the home. Do not handle pets or other animals while sick.
  • Make sure shared spaces in the home have good air flow, such as an air conditioner or an opened window, weather permitting.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60 to 95% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry. If your hands are visibly dirty, use soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • The patient should wear a facemask when he or she is around other people. If the patient is not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), any caregiver should wear a mask when in the same room as the patient.
  • Wear a disposable facemask and gloves when you touch or have contact with the patient’s blood, stool, or body fluids, such as saliva, sputum, nasal mucus, vomit, urine.
    • Throw out disposable facemasks and gloves after using them. Do not reuse.
    • Remove gloves first and dispose of them. Then, immediately clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Next, remove and dispose of facemask, and immediately clean your hands again with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid sharing household items with the patient. You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, bedding, or other items. After the patient uses these items, you should wash them thoroughly using the guidelines below.
  • Clean all “high-touch” surfaces, such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and bedside tables, every day.
  • Wash laundry thoroughly.
  • Place all used disposable gloves, facemasks, and other contaminated items in a lined container before disposing of them with other household waste. Clean your hands (with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) immediately after handling these items. Soap and water should be used preferentially if hands are visibly dirty.

How to kill flu virus on surfaces

The brand Clorox has recommendations that correspond to the type of product you’re using:

Disinfecting wipes:

  • Wipe surface to be disinfected.
  • Keep surface wet for 4 minutes.
  • Let surface dry.
  • For highly soiled surfaces, clean excess dirt first.
  • For items that come in contact with food or mouths (like baby bottles or toys), rinse with warm water and let air-dry.

Premixed cleaners containing bleach:

  • Spray 6 to 8 inches from surface and allow product to penetrate tough stains and messes.
  • Let stand 30 seconds.
  • Wipe with a wet sponge or cloth and rinse with water, no scrubbing required.
  • For heavily soiled surfaces, pre-clean surface before disinfecting.
  • For items that come in contact with food or mouths (like baby bottles or toys), rinse with warm water and let air-dry.

Disinfecting bleach:

  • Pre-wash surface.
  • Mop or wipe with a solution of 1/2 cup of disinfecting bleach per gallon of water.
  • Allow solution to contact the surface for 5 minutes.
  • For items that come in contact with food or mouths (like baby bottles or toys), rinse with warm water and let air-dry.

Social distancing

In addition to following the guidelines above, health and government officials recommend avoiding large gatherings and maintaining a distance of 6 feet from other people (commonly called social distancing). This reduces the chance of contact with anyone knowingly or unknowingly carrying the infection.

Ideas for Fun Family Activities at Home

Ideas for Fun Family Activities at Home

Many schools have moved classes online, and many of us are working from home these days. That brings finding fun things families can do together top of mind. Many of us are struggling to balance working from home, caring for their families, and organizing family activities at home.

We’ve compiled some ideas for keeping your children entertained – and educated – until schools reopen for onsite classes.

Bur first, we wanted to pass along some helpful advice for helping your entire family cope during these uncertain times.

Establish a routine

Josh Golin, Executive Director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, says the first priority for parents is to help their children feel safe. It’s important that our kids “don’t absorb all the anxiety that we’re feeling,” Golin said. He says it’s just as important for parents to take pressure off themselves to provide a “traditional academic” experience for young children.

Research shows kids thrive on routines. Regardless of how parents fill their child’s time at home, experts say they should aim to maintain a predictable schedule each day.

Some fun things to do with family at home

Wading through ideas online for activities and experiences for your children can be overwhelming. We’ve compiled a list of fun things to do at home with family inside to help your kids stay active and engaged.

  • Many museums offer virtual tours.
  • The National Association for the Education of Young Children has several online resources to help parents come up with fun and educational activities.
  • Build a fort with blankets or cardboard boxes.
  • Make time for active play.
  • Make mazes or puzzles for each other to solve.
  • Download an app and learn how to edit videos.
  • Call your elderly neighbors and see what you can do to help. Make happy notes and leave them on their door.
  • Play Monopoly or other board games.
  • Create a treasure hunt for them (leaving clues around the house or yard).
  • Have a fancy dinner at home. Put on your fanciest dress-up clothes, evening dress and jewelry.
  • Do a science experiment.
  • Order seeds and plants for your garden.
  • Pitch a tent inside and have a family campout.
  • Take out all the beach chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards and make a beach day in your living room.
  • Make fun decorations for Easter and decorate the house with them.
  • Do shadow puppets in the dark.
  • Learn to juggle.
  • Experiment all day on devising the ultimate chocolate chip cookie. Tasting mandatory.
  • Make a comic book.
  • Have a reading or movie marathon.
  • Take turns saying tongue twisters.
  • Send messages to your friends and relatives with your favorite memories with them.
  • Build paper airplanes and have a flying contest.
  • Make a time capsule. Have your kids decide what items to put in it and where to bury it.
  • Do some indoor bowling. If you don’t want to purchase an indoor bowling set, just line up six to 10 water bottles at the end of your hallway or living room. Use a line of duct tape as the starting line, grab a medium-sized indoor ball and start bowling!
  • Make an indoor treasure hunt for the kids! Come up with some clues, hide items and let the kids go wild. Maybe throw in some historical facts about Texas.
  • Set up an indoor photo booth. Grab some construction paper, glue, glitter and get to making crafts you can use for a fun photo booth kind of day with the kids.
  • Have a family karaoke night! There are lots of karaoke tracks on YouTube.
  • Let your kids host a family talent show.
  • Make your own dance video!

Some guidelines on screen time for kids

One advantage of all the available technology is that your children can have Skype or Facetime chats with their friends, cousins, and grandparents. This can be a huge help for staying connected and feeling less isolated.

Vincent Costanza, chief academic officer for Teaching Strategies, which focuses on early education curriculum, assessment and professional development, says there are times when technology can enhance relationships. “Setting up experiences where technology is used to connect with others are certainly appropriate and should be leveraged at this time.”

A few resources you might want to check out for educational content are the Kennedy Center’s daily lunch doodle with children’s book author Mo Willems and the PBS Kids Play and Learn Science app, which provides ideas for hands-on, non-screen science projects. NAEYC has advice online for parents on how to choose technology for young children, and Common Sense Media is also a good resource for parents to determine which websites, movies and books are age-appropriate.

This tragic event unearthed a true Hill Country treasure which you can experience firsthand with a trained guide. During the 3-hour tour, you will walk along an exposed fault zone, identify fossils, explore the Early Cretaceous limestone formations that were deposited over 110 million years ago, photograph dinosaur footprints, and even follow aquifer waters as they course through the Gorge as springs, channels and waterfalls. And the Gorge gives Tour Participants an opportunity to explore dinosaur tracks and perfectly preserved fossils, exposed for the first time in millions of years. Fossilized sea urchins are so perfectly preserved that you can see the spines and the minute seams along the creatures’ bodies. You’ll even see fossilized ocean ripples in the limestone. Tours available weekdays and weekends, only $10 per person. You must pre-register and pre-pay ahead of time.

Best Brunch in New Braunfels

The Meyer Ranch Guide to the Best Brunch in New Braunfels

There’s just something special about brunch. Maybe it’s the more relaxed pace, or the opportunity to catch up with friends and family. Or maybe it’s the “anything goes” variety of delicious food and beverage choices. Whatever the reason, one of the first questions we hear from Meyer Ranch homeowners is “Where’s the best brunch in New Braunfels?”

We’ve compiled a list of our ten favorite brunch spots, in no particular order. You’ll quickly see you don’t have to travel far at all to find Sunday brunch in New Braunfels – there are many excellent choices within minutes of Meyer Ranch.

Best Brunch in New Braunfels Tx

1. The Buttermilk Café. This hometown favorite consistently lands at the top of many lists for excellent brunch places in New Braunfels – including ours! Of
course that means there’s usually a wait, especially on weekends, but it’s well
worth it. Buttermilk Café is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day of the week,
and breakfast is served all day long. Popular menu items include the Coastal
Breakfast, with yummy shrimp and lobster sauce, and chicken and waffles.

2. The Gruene Door. Specializing in simple, clean and diverse flavors, the Gruene Door prides itself on using local ingredients in its cuisine – even some grown in
their own garden! You just can’t get much fresher than that. Patrons recommend the shrimp and grits, and love the fact that the brunch menu features items unavailable during the rest of the week.

3. The Old River City Café serves classic Southern cuisine – and a mix of classic comfort food and healthy options. This establishment is widely regarded as one of the best places to eat in New Braunfels. In addition to the quality of the food, Old River City Café gets high marks for excellent service and its inviting back patio. Local live music accompanies your Sunday brunch, and we highly recommend you try the chicken fried steak!

4. The River House is another restaurant that sources its ingredients locally. If
you’re looking for good food in New Braunfels, you can’t go wrong with a visit to The River House! Set in a charming, renovated house and decorated with historic black and white photos of New Braunfels, you’ll love the ambience here just as much as the food. Try the quiche of the day for a special treat. Or, if you’re feeling more “lunchy” than “brunchy” order one of the legendary hamburgers and prepare to be wowed.

5. The food at Fork and Spoon tastes just as good as it looks – and it looks
scrumptious! Choose from a variety of omelettes, a chicken fried steak breakfast to die for, mouth-watering French toast and pkjlmore. Fork and Spoon also gets high marks for its friendly staff and outstanding service.

6. Krause’s Café and Biergarten is the perfect choice if you’re looking to add
authentic German flavor to your Sunday brunch. Try the pork schnitzel and eggs, or perhaps the Bauern schnitzel. There’s a wide variety of traditional brunch fare, as well, including brioche French toast, several types of pancakes, and avocado toast. And if you decide to indulge in a beer after brunch, this is the place to do it. The biergarten menu features a truly mind-blowing variety of German and domestic draughts. Wine aficionados will also find plenty of choices to sample.

7. A relative newcomer to New Braunfels, Texas Bistro is quickly making its
reputation for innovative, fresh cuisine. The location is a bit off the beaten path, on south Seguin Avenue, but well worth finding. Just a few of the items on the brunch menu are crab benedict, the tostada tower, crème brulee French toast and shrimp and grits.

8. If you’re looking for a fun experience, as well as excellent food, try The Downtowner. Wait staff are dressed like mechanics, a nod to the restaurant’s
unique décor. Visitors rave about the fresh homemade biscuits, duck eggs,
homemade sausage and avocado toast. Vegetables served at the restaurant are locally sourced.

9. The Gristmill, located in nearby Gruene, is widely known for both its unique take on Southern comfort food and its beautiful location on the Guadalupe River. This multi-level restaurant offers 10 distinct dining areas, indoor dining with river views, and so much history.

10. Another option for Guadalupe River views is the Gruene River Grill, with yummy options like shrimp won tons, Gruene chicken enchiladas and home-made desserts.

What are the Natural Bridge Caverns? Your Meyer Ranch Guide.

Natural Bridge Caverns

What are the Natural Bridge Caverns? Your Meyer Ranch Guide.

A natural wonder located less than 10 miles from Meyer Ranch, the Natural Bridge Caverns are the largest known commercial caverns in Texas. They are located next to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, a drive-through wildlife safari park.

The caverns were discovered by four college students in 1960. The students had obtained permission from the landowners to explore the area and hoped to prove their theory that large underground passages existed beneath the site’s 60-foot natural limestone bridge. Their theory was proven to be correct, leading to development of what are the Natural Bridge Caverns.

The Cathedral Room, Illuminations Tour, Natural Bridge Caverns, Texas

How the Caverns Came to Be

The name of this natural attraction comes from the 60 ft natural limestone slab bridge that spans the amphitheater setting of the cavern’s entrance. The span was left suspended when a sinkhole collapsed below it.

For those still asking themselves, “What are the Natural Bridge Caverns” before planning a trip to the site, here’s a little more information. The caverns feature several unique speleothems (more commonly known as stalagmites and stalactites) and other geological formations. The temperature inside the cave is 70 degrees year-round and the humidity rate is a constant 99 percent. The deepest part of the public tour is 180 feet below the surface, although undeveloped areas of the cavern reach depths of 230 feet.

The caverns are still slowly developing, and they’re still being explored. In 2005, several hundred feet were added to the surveyed length of the cave. There are still more unexplored leads in sections of the Discovery Passages (North Cavern).

Since the caverns are made up of porous limestone, when rainwater enters the caverns it flows and drips constantly throughout, creating the formations and giving them a waxy luster seen in few caverns.

How to Explore the Natural Bridge Caverns

The Natural Bridge Caverns are open to the public most days with the exception of major holidays. There are a variety of types and lengths of guided tours to choose from, and the site also holds several special events every year, such as trail runs or archery challenges.

If you’re interested in a New Braunfels adventure tour of the caverns, here are a few of the options you can choose from:

adventure tour
Jamie Kern at the Birth Canal. The Birth Canal is the tightest section along the the Discovery Tour.

The Discovery Tour – Walk 180 feet below the ground and travel through half a mile of these spectacular caverns. An experienced guide will explain the various formations you’ll see along the way, including stalagmites and stalactites, flowstones, chandeliers, and soda straws. Photos are not only allowed, they’re encouraged!

The Hidden Passages Tour – Experience the caverns in a unique way on this tour, which includes a brief time in total darkness as all lights are turned off! The Hidden Passages are home to rare and delicate formations, including unusually long soda straw stalactites, waves of cave ribbon and many welt and turnip shields.

The fun’s not over when you’ve finished your caverns tour! There’s plenty more to do and explore above ground, too.

The Zip Rails & Rope Course will make you feel like you’re flying! With over 300 total feet of suspended track, you can soar high over the tree canopy. It’s like riding a zip line, but the best part is you are in control of what challenges and routes you take as you navigate to the zip rails. There’s even a smaller version for the kiddos.

The Canopy Challenge is a fun opportunity to check your balance on four stories worth of obstacles. You have up to 30 minutes to grapple your way to the top of our 60-foot, four-tier ropes course. Your agility and strength will be tested on 47 fascinating obstacles, such as the Burma Buckets and Criss-Cross Tight Ropes that will have your mind and your muscles straining.

You’ll definitely want a souvenir to help you remember this beautiful, exciting natural attraction. Discovery Village Trading Post has a wide variety of items, from rocks and minerals to the more traditional T-shirts. You’ll also want to visit Big Daddy’s Sweets, Treats and Brew to take the edge off your appetite and quench your thirst!

Tips for Families Moving with a Pet

Tips for Families Moving with a Pet

Meyer Ranch in New Braunfels is designed to make it easier to savor life’s simple pleasures. For a majority of families, that means spending time with their pets. A recent survey by the American Veterinary Association found that Texas ranks ninth in the nation for the highest percentage of households with dogs. Nationwide, almost ¾ of all households have at least one pet of some kind.

Moving into your new pet-friendly home New Braunfels Tx is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. If it’s stressful for you, think how it feels for your pets, who don’t understand what’s happening or why. Pets sense your energy, so if you’re anxious, they probably will be, too.

There are several ways to make moving with a pet easier for every member of the family. Here are our most helpful in moving with pets tips.

Before moving with a pet: Get Prepared

Boxes and moving supplies can be tempting for curious kitties and dogs. Keeping everything in one room, or in the garage, with the door closed. Cats love to hide inside boxes, and bubble wrap and tape just look like toys to your dog or teething puppy. Removing temptation will make your move much easier.

Make sure the things your pets need will be easy to find after the move. A few items to have on hand include:

    • Waste bags
    • Favorite toys
    • Something for your dog to chew on (rawhide bones, chewing sticks or a favorite chew toy)
    • Leash
    • Kitty litter, box, and scooper
    • Crate, doggy gate or carrier
    • Blanket
    • Water bowls
    • Food

The Difference Between Cats and Dogs

Cats and dogs react differently o traveling or being crated. Cats often dislike being confined to a carrier or crate, while dogs may see their crates as a place of comfort.

Putting treats inside your cat’s crate prior to moving day can help ease his or her anxiety about getting inside. Consider making the carrier a little cozier with a small blanket or an old T-shirt that has your scent.

The scent is important to dogs, too. If you can, take your dog for a walk in your new neighborhood and let them check out the interior of your new home prior to moving day. The move may feel less scary to your dog if he or she is already familiar with all the smells.

If you’re moving from another city, it’s a good idea to research veterinarians and pet emergency rooms. Keep their information in your phone just in case something happens during the move. New Braunfels has several excellent veterinary clinics close to Meyer Ranch.

On the Big Day

Moving involves a lot of activity, open doors and distractions. Take some precautions to make sure your pet is safe and secure.

A few suggestions for moving with pets are:

  • Ask a friend or family member to take them in for the day
  • Take them to a doggy daycare or boarding facility
  • Install a pet gate in one of the doorframes
  • Keep your pets crated until the move is complete

Settling Into Your New Home at Meyer Ranch

In general, dogs are quicker to adjust to change than cats. Your cat may hide during the first few days in your new home. Don’t try to force him or her to come out. Be patient and allow them to take things at their own pace.

For both cats and dogs, a consistent routine is essential. Have a specific place for their food and water dishes, their beds, and litter boxes.

Exercise can help both you and your pets lessen anxiety and make the move easier. Finally, for dogs – and some cats – exercise wears them out and lessens their anxiety. Take your dog for walks in the new neighborhood – it’s also a great way to meet neighbors who have dogs of their own! If your cat has a favorite toy, spending some time engaging in active play will help them become accustomed to their new surroundings.

Making Your Home Pet-Friendly

For families with dogs, pet-friendly homes start with a securely fenced yard. Since your home at Meyer Ranch is brand new, this is less of a concern. However, you’ll still want to check for any areas your pet may be able to squeeze underneath or a gate that smart dogs can open easily.

For cat owners, you might consider keeping them confined to one room at first, then gradually let them explore the rest of your home.

Keeping Your Home Smelling and Looking Fresh

Once you’ve moved into your pet-friendly home New Braunfels Tx, you’ll want to keep it clean and free of tell-tale pet odors.

Here are a few tips for pet-friendly homes:

  1. Place doormats both inside and outside any entrances your pet will use. Mats are excellent initial barriers for dirt and germs – and they work for people, too!
  2. Groom your pets on a regular basis to help control shedding and odors. To stay on a regular schedule, book grooming appointments in advance or set reminders for yourself. If you groom your dog yourself, look for products that reduce odors.
  3. Vacuum or mop your floors frequently, especially the areas where your pet likes to play or nap.
  4. Cleaning your pet’s food and water dishes, and your cat’s litter trays, on a regular basis helps to control bacteria and odors.
